Professional Development Workshop: I Hear Her Calling: Earthly Connections and Creations
Led by Bianca Daniela Nachtman + Shay and Devin
Sunday March 8, 2026 (Rain date Sunday March 15)
11:00 AM -3:00 PM
Visitor Centre, Uptown Waterloo
As artists we work in so many different fields and mediums that can tie us up in the physical, but how often do we connect with the energy that threads through this earth and through us, and how can this aid or evolve our practice?
What this workshop will entail is an hour-long walk and forage in nature where you will gather and/or document materials that inspire you and you would like to create with. Following that will be an hour and a half of creative play where we use the materials gathered and your background to create either a tool, piece, or idea that embodies your art, voice and passion. Artists of all mediums are welcomed, this reconnection and exploration will inspire any field!
To assist us before we forage, Shay and Devin both Two-Spirit Indigenous people residing in Kitchener-Waterloo, along the Haldimand Tract will be gracing us with their presence and insight to discuss proper foraging customs and land & medicine awareness, along with answering any questions needed to attain as much respect and knowledge for the land we will source from.
Bianca Daniela Nachtman: As an artist, I choose to express myself through wearable art. I enjoy how costumes can transform and disguise the physical form, creating an intimate relationship with the body. Lately, I have become enthralled by the complex relationship between nature, femininity, and spiritual authority, and how we are ecologically entangled with this earth. This realization and attunement started my journey with using natural elements in my pieces.
Shay (She/He/They) and Devin (He/They) are both Two-Spirit Indigenous people residing in Kitchener-Waterloo, along the Haldimand Tract. Their passion for art, nature and community will allow attendees to leave with a new knowledge of the land and medicines of Waterloo Region. They are excited to offer an opportunity for folks to make new friends and leave with a small piece of art of their own.
